Transform Your Money Mindset:5 Actionable Steps To Create a Mindset for Financial Freedom

Writer: Andrea Zavala Life CoachAndrea Zavala Life Coach

Money. It is a resource we all want. Some even kill for it.

Money has been the motivation to fight wars, win love and rule the world. With money having such a high status symbol in our modern society with people constantly posting about their latest purchase, car or surgery, it can be hard to have a positive mindset with it when everything is set up to remind you how little you have. This can greatly impact your overall well-being and impact the overall comfortability of our lives.

We were raised to believe the only way to make money was to work hard and save, save, save. Yes, working hard is a good habit to have that will earn you a larger income but saving is not the only way to earn a passive income. Although I am a big believer in having a savings account, saving is the slowest way to create wealth. The wealthy make their money work for them. They invest, build and use their money to create something more valuable. Yes, sometimes this requires risk, but most great things in life do.

In order to overcome these standards, we need to begin shifting our mindset around money, from scarcity to abundance regardless of what is in your bank account. That is the key to achieving financial wealth and reducing stress at the same time.

When you can go from seeing money as something that is scarce and limited versus seeing money as something that can work for you no matter how much you have, you win the game.

How do you make this mindset shift happen?

The number one thing you have to do is dig deep and find the reason you have a negative mindset with money and then…let it go.

Here are the 5 actionable steps I used to shift my mindset around money that you can use too.

Stop Comparing Yourself to Others

In a world that revolves around social media and who can get the most likes and followers, comparing yourself to others has become the norm. We chase after the materialistic things others have from the perfect spouse, that hot IG model to people’s homes and lifestyles. Trying to keep up with others financially when it is not within your means can create stress, financial hardships and a negative mindset including depression and more.

Here are a few tips you can use to stop comparing yourself to others:

  1. Remember most people only post the highlights of their lives, never the low points. This is just a snapshot and not reality.

  2. You are not a follower or like count. You are worthy and more valuable than the amount of followers or likes you have.

  3. Set your own standards for success. Stop following the standards that have been set by social media and society at large and start where you are at. This lowers stress and helps you set realistic financial goals that are attainable for you.

Build Trust with Yourself

Building trust with yourself is one of the hardest but one of the most important skills to build when you begin the journey to financial freedom. You do this by following through with your word and taking the actions you have committed yourself to consistently. If you are consistently breaking promises to yourself you will never create the trust you need. This takes rewiring your mind. Our brains get locked into patterns after you repeat an action or behavior enough times. Your brain will make pathways for these actions and behaviors.

Let’s say it’s payday and you have been broke for the last week waiting for this check to come in and the first thing you do once you get paid is start shopping on Amazon or head to the bar and end up spending excessively. This is a habit you have created that your brain goes straight to every time you get paid.

The good thing is habits can be broken and new neural pathways can be created.

This requires you to take new actions. Instead of spending your money on Amazon, gambling and other muses that feed your old patterns…save or stay home. This is going to feel very uncomfortable at first but with time it will get easier. As you create these new behaviors your brain takes action and begins to notice it as a pattern and begins creating new connections to lock this in.

Create a Budget That Makes You Happy

Budgeting does not have to be a burden. It may feel like you are denying yourself things but you are in the process of creating financial freedom. A shift in mindset with budgeting can lead to an entire world of freedom. By creating a budget that aligns with your happiness, goals and lifestyle you can not only live the life you desire but also start saving for emergency funds and your goals!

Focus on Growth

Make your money work for you by creating a growth mindset. This can shift your outlook. Start by shifting your focus from limitations to possibilities. This simple self-improvement technique will do wonders for you. Begin by listening to money affirmations on YouTube to help get you in the right mindset. Start finding positive ways to see money all around you from saying ‘thank you’ when you pay a bill instead of hating it. Start becoming grateful for the money you do have and more will come.

Educate Yourself

Focus on how your money can work for you. Your money can grow more money almost like a super power. Increase your financial literacy by reading books from experts, following influencers (one of my favorites is Wallstreet Trapper) and even taking classes or online courses. Some of the topics you should begin educating yourself in are personal finance, investments and effective money management strategies. Acquiring knowledge empowers you to make informed choices and build a strong financial foundation. Find a life coach or financial coach you can work with to help you achieve a growth mindset.

Transforming your money mindset is a powerful journey that can help you gain the freedom you need to start living the life you want. By using these strategies you can cultivate a positive and empowering relationship with money.
