There was a time in my life were mentally and emotionally I was struggling every morning. I was in a really bad place mentally and was going through a very difficult break up. I began adding morning meditation into my daily routine and I began to notice an immediate energy shift and increased motivation to work towards my goals and a more positive outlook on life. I also learned the power of standing still and listening. This has helped not only in relationships but has also leveled up how I show up for meetings, mom life and more. Morning meditation has helped teach me some incredible life changing skills.

Here are more great science-based benefits of adding morning meditation into your daily routine and how it might help you too.

Reduce Stress

Stress can wreak all kinds of havoc in our minds, our bodies and our guts if we do not keep it in check. Those crazy thoughts and negative beliefs you are constantly telling yourself are literally eating away at your body from the inside out.

Here's how it works.

The stress hormone cortisol is at it's highest in the mornings when you first wake up. This is why your brain goes right to thinking about all of your ongoing problems and concerns when you wake up. This triggers your body to release an inflammatory chemical called cytokines.

Some of the affects are: bad sleep patterns, depression, anxiety, fatigue and more.

Meditation and clearing your mind can help your body prevent your body from triggering that response.

Meditation has been known to help with conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome, fibromyalgia and PTSD.

Increased Emotional Health

In several studies, meditation was found to help those with depression. In other studies meditation has been known to decrease negative thought patterns.

Meditation also helps to decrease stress in your body which directly causes your body to release less of the inflammatory chemical, cytokines.

Decreased Blood Pressure

Meditation is a great way to lower blood pressure and one of my favorite ways to help regulate mine. The calming breathing pattern used when meditating allows more nitric oxide into your body. This compound is known for widening blood vessels and therefore letting your blood flow more freely. Imagine that just a little meditation can go a long way.

Meditate for at least 5 minutes or longer for optimal effect.

Increased Focus And Concentration

Meditation is a great way to get focused and increase your concentration. In my research, one study found that those who meditate on a regular basis were able to increase their concentration by 10 times!

This increased concentration is what makes meditation such a great morning activity.

Meditation also helps to increase focus by consistently practicing focusing during meditation. During meditation a focus is placed either on a word or on your breathing to help you maintain a calm focused state.

The best part is when you take this skill into everyday life. Instead of focusing on your breath, you can use this same skill in the same way to focus you attention on work assignments, changing your thoughts and anything else.

Increased Self-Awareness

Meditation is a great way to gain self-awareness and help you discover answers to any questions or life or career transitions you are going through.

When you meditate you put yourself into a state of calm and peace. As you gain awareness of your body and how it reacts to thoughts and triggers you gain self-awareness.

Self-awareness in it's truest form is something many of lack. We are constantly reacting and then numbing ourselves with television, food, alcohol and drugs or negative relationships. If we were more self-aware we would break free and let go of anything that does not serve us.

Meditation is a great way to create peace, gain clarity and a great tool to help you control your emotions.
